Baby Formula Neocate Associated with Bone Fractures & Rickets
Neocate is a prescribed formula for children and infants with food allergies and intolerances to regular formulas. It is recommended for children who suffer from cow milk allergy, soy allergy, short bowel syndrome and malabsorption, multiple food protein intolerances (MFPI) or Multiple Food Allergies, and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Unfortunately, a recent study suggests that children who rely on Neocate as their sole form of nutrition could be at risk of developing serious and debilitating bone conditions. To date, the manufacturer has failed to warn of this side effect.
Injuries Linked to Baby Formula
According to a 2017 Yale study, Neocate baby formula is linked to bone disorders, rickets, fractures, and low phosphate levels in infants and children. In this study, all 51 participants were taking Neocate as their sole or primary source of nutrition. Ninety-four percent of the participants saw signs of severe calcium and phosphate deficiencies, hypophosphatemia, and hypocalcemia. These conditions lead to serious injuries such as bone fractures, stunted growth, and poor development. Furthermore, the Yale study found that children who were switched to an alternative formula saw nearly immediate increases of phosphate and calcium levels in their blood, leading to eventual improvement of their skeletal development.
Manufacturer Fails to Warn
In 2016, Nutricia warned that babies and children using Neocate “should be routinely monitored by clinicians.” However, the company has failed to warn that children taking Neocate could develop rickets, spontaneous fractures, and broken bones. Nutricia has not disclosed that this baby formula could put your child’s health at risk.
