Viagra and Skin Cancer: New Study Shows Possible Link

study recently published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows early evidence of an association between Viagra and skin cancer. The study analyzes the incidence of melanoma in men who have been prescribed PDE5A inhibitors (which include sildenafil – Viagra – and other erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension drugs).

The study analyzed data from more than 25,000 patients. Men who had recently used sildenafil had nearly twice the risk of developing melanoma after adjusting for other risk factors. Although the study’s results are not conclusive enough to prove more than a correlation, researchers did conclude that erectile dysfunction itself was not associated with an increased risk for melanoma.

In an accompanying editorial, June Robinson agrees that additional studies are necessary before clinical recommendations should be changed. Still, she points out that early detection is crucial for survival rates. Physicians can take measures like performing melanoma screenings before writing prescriptions for Viagra (sildenafil).
