Plastic Chemicals in Newborn’s Medical Devices Pose Questions

The Washington Post reports that toxic chemicals have been found in medical devices used for the treatment of premature babies.

The chemical, known as DEHP, is used in plastic compounds. It is commonly used to make medical devices such as ventilators and feeding tubes more flexible. DEHP poses a significant danger should it enter the system of a premature child. Studies indicate that the chemicals can dangerously affect a premature baby’s hormone levels, putting an already fragile system in serious peril.

DEHP is also used in children’s toys. The European Union has already announced that it intends to phase out DEHP by 2015. Many doctors and scientists believe that medical devices can be made using less toxic chemicals.
