In June 2022, A&M voluntarily recalled its Vidalia onions due to concerns that the onions may have been contaminated with the bacteria listeria monocytogenes.
Vidalia onions are sweet onions. The recall occurred as a result of the company finding bacteria on one of its pack lines. The recalled onions were sold under the Little Bear brand packed from June 20-23, 2022. The recalled onions had the sticker code 4159. The recall impacts Wegmans and Publix in five states where the vidalia onions were sent.
Wegman’s sold the potentially contaminated onions from June 23-24, 2022 in New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Publix sold them from June 22-24 in Florida and in specific counties in Georgia.
Consuming listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause the infection, listeriosis. The infection usually affects older adults, pregnant women, infants, and adults who have weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are approximately 10 times more likely to get listeriosis. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn.
Symptoms of listeriosis include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Diarrhea
- Other gastrointestinal problems
- Headache
- Confusion
- Convulsions
Since onions have a shelf life of up to two months, check your pantry or fridge if you think you may have purchased the product.
