In July 2022, Eat Just Inc. recalled vegan JUST Egg Chopped Spring Greens products from retail stores in five states due to potential listeria monocytogenes contamination concerns.
Although the recalled lots themselves tested negative for listeria monocytogenes before leaving the manufacturing facility, another lot that shares the same ingredients with the recalled lots has tested positive for the bacteria. The products were sold in retail stores in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
The listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause an infection known as listeriosis. Listeriosis symptoms can take up to 70 days to develop after the contaminated food was consumed.
Symptoms of listeriosis include:
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Persistent fever
- Muscle aches
- Severe headache
- Neck stiffness
At-risk groups for listeriosis include the elderly, young children, people with weakened immune symptoms, and pregnant women. Although pregnant women who are infected with listeriosis usually experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
