Everything to Know About Paralysis

Tuesday March 1st, 2022 Catastrophic Injuries, Firm News

A spine injury can be devastating if you experience it because of someone else’s negligence. Unfortunately, these are some of the most severe injuries because they may lead to paralysis. Paralysis can significantly reduce your quality of life, completely disabling your motor function and requiring you to receive lifelong care. Below, we’ll detail all you need to know about paralysis.

Different Types of Paralysis

Paralysis can occur in numerous ways, each impacting your life differently than the others. There are four different types of paralysis, including monoplegia, hemiplegia, paraplegia, and quadriplegia. Here is how each of these can impact your life:

  • Monoplegia occurs in just one limb. For instance, if you suffer monoplegia, you will lose function in your affected limb.
  • Hemiplegia occurs in one side of the body. This type of paralysis can cause you to lose function in your right or left side while maintaining the function of the other side.
  • Paraplegia impacts the lower half of your body below the location of the injury. Paraplegia requires the injured party to use a wheelchair to get around.
  • Quadriplegia affects all four limbs. Typically, this type of paralysis occurs when damage occurs in the cervical area of your spine.

Complete vs. Incomplete

Paralysis can be either complete or incomplete, depending on how severe your injury is. Complete paralysis will result in full function loss of the affected limbs. Incomplete means that you may be able to retain some function. In any case, both of them can significantly impact your quality of life and make it challenging to complete daily tasks.
