WEN Hair Products
“Natural” Doesn’t Always Mean “Safe”
Using shampoo, conditioner, or other hair products is often a part of our daily routine before beginning our day. When we purchase products for daily use, we expect them to be safe (at the very least) and to do what they claim to do. When a hair product claims to improve your hair condition, but instead your hair begins falling out by the handful, consumers of that product are going to be angry.
What are WEN Hair Products?
Over the past 16 years, WEN Hair Care has sold over 40 million bottles of its products to customers throughout the United States. Developed by celebrity stylist Chaz Dean, WEN Hair Care bases its product line on the theory that shampoo is bad for your hair.
WEN makes a variety of products, including:
- Cleansing Conditioner of various fragrances
- Hair Masks and Treatments
- Re-Moist Mask, Re Moist Intensive Hair Treatment, Treatment Mist Duo, Treatment Oil, SIXTHIRTEEN Ultra Nourishing Cleansing Treatment, Volumizing Treatment Spray, Replenishing Treatment Mist, Finishing Treatment Crème, Detangling Treatment Spray
- Glosses and Serums
- Straightening Smoothing Gloss, Smoothing Glossing Serum, Glossing Shine Serum
- Styling Crème, Anti-Frizz Styling Crème
- Nourishing Mousse
- Defining Paste
- Volumizing Root Lift
- Texturizing Spray
- Men Control Texture, Men Hair and Body Oil, Bath, Body and Hair Oil, and Texture Balm
The company claims on its website, “WEN® Hair Care was founded on the belief that beautiful hair can and should be achieved without sacrificing your hair’s health. No harsh sulfates that lather—just fuller, stronger, healthier-looking hair.” WEN® allegedly brings a completely different approach to the way you cleanse your hair.
What Injuries Have These Products Caused?
Unfortunately for many WEN consumers, the results were just the opposite of what the company claimed. As of July 2016, over 1,386 reports of adverse reactions to the product have been reported to the FDA, with an additional 21,000 complaints reported directly to Chaz Dean, Inc. and Guthy Renker, LLC. These complaints stemmed from consumers experiencing extreme hair loss, hair damage, and/or scalp irritation. In fact, the problems caused by WEN’s products have even garnered national attention from sources like Buzzfeed, Cosmopolitan magazine, and CBS News.
According to an article in the Huffington Post, “Studies have shown that patients who experience hair loss suffer from self-esteem and body image issues, impacting their social life and feelings of attractiveness.”
