Traumatic Brain Injury: The Signs & Symptoms

Posted on 02/09/2018Back

Overview

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when the brain is damaged by a violent blow to the head. TBIs commonly are the result of a car accident, but they can be caused by any impact to the head, such as from falls or sports injuries, or from violent shaking of the head.Graphic of brain with pain in back of head

The Injuries

A TBI can have a variety of symptoms, including physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral, and these will vary based on the severity of the TBI.  The severity of injuries often depends on the

severity of the blow.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

A mild TBI may include symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and dizziness.

Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury

Individuals with a moderate TBI may experience difficulty concentrating, memory loss, an inability to multitask, irritability, and anxiety, in addition to the symptoms of a mild TBI. Moderate TBI symptoms may occur for significantly longer periods of time.

Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

A severe TBI may involve additional symptoms beyond those which typically result from a mild or moderate TBI. A severe TBI could cause someone to be in a coma, lose sense of smell/taste, suffer from severe tinnitus or ringing in the ears, or develop an intolerance to light. Some individuals undergo extensive surgeries to address symptoms associated with a severe TBI. Sadly, the majority of these individuals deal with complications throughout the remainder of their lives.

The Problem

A traumatic brain injury can significantly impact someone’s life. Oftentimes, individuals never fully recover from a TBI.  Many experience high medical expenses, lost wages and the loss of wage-earning capacity, and a diminished quality of life. If you have experienced a violent blow to the head, consult a medical professional to assess the extent of the injury.
