NHTSA Investigating Kia & Hyundai Recall Procedure

Posted on 05/24/2017Back

In September of 2015, Hyundai issued a recall for 470,000 vehicles due to problems with engine failure. In March of 2017, the recall was expanded to 1.2 million additional vehicles for the exact same reason – this time including Kia models. Now, the Associated Press reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the recall, alleging the companies took too long to recall vehicles that posed a dangerous crash risk.

According to the AP’s report, the initial recall included only Hyundai vehicles manufactured before April 2012. The expanded recall, issued 18 months later, includes Kia models that were left out of the original recall because, while the engines are the same, they were manufactured on a different production line and were not expected to have the same problems. Unfortunately, they do – and thousands of people have been placed at increased risk for serious injury as a result.

When a company is made aware of potential dangers posed by their product, they have a responsibility to act swiftly to protect consumers. Failure to do so makes the company liable for any damages that may result, even after a recall has been issued.
