Medtronic, a medical device manufacturer embroiled in controversies over defective insulin pumps and bone growth products, recently agreed to a nearly $10 million settlement in a separate lawsuit relating to its pacemaker and defibrillator products. The whistleblower lawsuit alleged that Medtronic used gifts of grant money and “speaking fees” to encourage doctors to implant Medtronic pacemakers and use Medtronic defibrillators.

$1.7 million of the settlement will go to the whistleblower who notified the Justice Department of the practice.
