E-Cigarette Explosion Concerns

An E-CigaretteIn its continuing coverage of e-cigarette safety, Time reports that dozens of new lawsuits revolving around exploding e-cig batteries have recently been filed in several states. According to Time, the e-cigarette models mentioned in these suits include:

  • Sigelei
  • iPV Technology Co.
  • Kangertech

However, the potential for an explosion may be present in all e-cigarette batteries, increasing risks for serious injury including burns, fractured bones, and a loss of eyesight.

According to an NBC News report, it is the design and shape of some e-cigarette batteries that make them “behave like ‘flaming rockets’” when they explode, although the exact cause of explosion is not always clear. It is known that extreme heat fluctuations can impact lithium-ion batteries in cell phones and laptops, which may be similar to what is happening with e-cigarettes. Over-charging the batteries or switching chargers may also increase risks for explosion. These risks are compounded in cheaper e-cigarette models that may not have built-in safety features that work to prevent an explosion.

In addition to serious personal injury, house fires and auto accidents have also been linked to defective e-cigarette batteries.
