Details on the Actos Settlement

Posted on 05/15/2015Back

Takeda Pharmaceuticals has agreed to a potential $2.4 billion settlement related to claims that its diabetes drug Actos caused bladder cancer.

Takeda, which does not admit fault as part of the settlement, will pay $2.37 billion in settlements if 95 percent of current litigants agree to the settlement offer. That total will rise to $2.4 billion if 97 percent of litigants opt-in to the settlement.

Takeda has made tens of billions of dollars on Actos, which, ironically, gained popularity as an alternative to Avandia, which can cause cardiovascular issues. While patients were made aware of the fact that Actos also posed a risk of cardiovascular conditions, they were caught by surprise in 2011 when the Food and Drug Administration noted that long-term use of Actos could raise the risk of bladder cancer by as much as 40 percent.
