Nutritional & Beverage Recall Expanded

On August 10, 2022, Lyons Magnus and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Lyons Magnus’ expansion of the original July 28, 2022, voluntary recall of many of its nutritional and beverage products. The expanded recall is also due to the potential for microbial contamination.

The cause of the potential contamination is that the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications. To see the full list of brands and codes that were recalled, click here.

Lyons Magnus announced that the products could be potentially contaminated by microbial contamination including cronobacter sakazakii and clostridium botulinum. Infections related to cronobacter sakazakii are rare; however, common symptoms of the illness include fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infections. Despite this, people with weakened immune systems and newborns are more susceptible to disease. If an infection occurs, it can cause rare bloodstream and central nervous system conditions and has been associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (poisoning). Foods contaminated with cronobacter sakazakii may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness.

Clostridium botulinum may cause a severe form of food poisoning. Symptoms usually begin six hours to two weeks after eating food contaminated with the toxin. Symptoms typically include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. If symptoms progress, they can cause respiratory paralysis that can cause death unless mechanical ventilation is used.

The beverages and nutritional products include almond non-dairy beverages, coconut non-dairy beverages, oat non-dairy beverages, soy non-dairy beverages, protein nutritional drinks, and plant-based protein shakes that were distributed starting in April 2021.
