Increase in Salmonella Outbreaks Linked to Backyard Chicken Farms

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an increase in the number of salmonella outbreaks in the United States is directly related to backyard chicken farms. The CDC reports that live poultry-associated salmonella (LPAS) outbreaks used to occur almost exclusively in the springtime when children are traditionally given small chicks as gifts. However, with the recent popularity of backyard chicken farms, LPAS has become a year-round problem.

Chicken feetAccording to CDC data, between 1990 and 2005, a total of 17 LPAS outbreaks with a median size of 12 case patients were reported. Between 2006 and 2014, 36 LPAS outbreaks were reported and these had a median size of 41 case patients per outbreak. That’s more than twice as many outbreaks in under half the time and, according to the CDC, entirely due to increased exposure from backyard chicken farms.

Chicken farmers have an obligation to protect those around them from illness or injury caused by their lifestyle choices.
