Roadwork Ahead: Protecting Yourself in Construction Zones

At GoldenbergLaw, our personal injury lawyers are aware of the many road construction projects underway throughout Minnesota.

Many of us in Minneapolis and St. Paul are familiar with what it means to see the orange cones, heavy equipment, and reflective vests on the road up ahead. These are usually signs to slow down and pay attention.

Despite this knowledge, we may continue to drive at the same speed and fail to pay attention to our surroundings. Throw in winter weather conditions, and roadwork sites can especially dangerous for drivers and road crews alike.“It’s like everyone forgot how to drive in the snow.” This is a phrase commonly heard by Minnesota drivers when winter weather hits. It’s easy to place blame on other drivers while paying little attention to your own driving habits. There is little you can do to stop the car weaving its way through road construction, but we can adjust our own behaviors.

With that in mind, here are driver-safety tips from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDot) to help you navigate through road construction without incident:

  1. Always wear your seat belt.
  2. Turn on your headlights.
  3. Turn off your cruise control.
  4. Slow down to allow for at least five car lengths between vehicles.
  5. Stay behind a snow plow; plowed road is safer road.
  6. Never drive into a snow cloud.

To better prepare yourself for any possible road work during your commute, you can check MnDot’s website beforehand by visiting or calling 511.

Sometimes, despite your best efforts to pay attention to your driving, you may slide off a Minneapolis-area road or freeway while traveling through a roadwork zone. If this happens, determining fault for the crash may require the help of an experienced accident and injury attorney.
