NHTSA Investigating Exhaust Leaks in Ford Explorers

Highway Traffic

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into exhaust leaks in model years 2011-2015 Ford Explorers. The NHTSA has received 154 complaints to date and at least one accident is suspected to have been caused by the issue.

According to the posting, “Complaints indicate that 1) operating the vehicle with full throttle applications (e.g., climbing steep grades or merging onto freeway ramps), and or 2) use of the air conditioning system in recirculation mode both contribute to exhaust gas being detected in the vehicle.” As reported by, these complaints have continued even after Ford issued two related Technical Service Bulletins, one of which included software updates that work to recirculate operation of the air conditioning unit during full-throttle applications. A recall has not yet been issued for this problem and the NHTSA has not commented on the number of vehicles involved. However, if you have a Ford Explorer manufactured between 2011 and 2015, it is a good idea to take it to your dealership for all software upgrades.
