Mother helping a child in a car seat

It’s Child Passenger Safety Week

During this week in September, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) promotes awareness to ensure that children are in the proper car seats while riding in vehicles. With car crashes being the number one cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 13, ensuring that your child is safe in your car is a top priority.

The NHTSA uses this week to remind all parents of the proper protocols that pertain to car and booster seats. While all car seats have individual restrictions with regard to your child’s height and weight, the general car seat guidelines are as follows:

  • Birth-12 months – your child should be in a rear-facing car seat
  • 1-3 years – keep your child in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the maximum height and weight restrictions, then move them into a forward-facing car seat
  • 4-7 years – keep your child in a forward-facing car seat until they reach the maximum height and weight restrictions, then move your child into a forward-facing booster seat
  • 8-12 years – keep your child in a booster seat until they reach a height that allows a seat belt to fit properly without the booster

Along with these general guidelines, the NHTSA uses Child Passenger Safety Week to remind parents that it’s always safer for your children to ride in the back seat as airbags can cause great harm to a child. Also, your child isn’t ready for a seatbelt with no booster seat unless the lap belt fits snugly across your child’s upper thighs (not their stomach) and the shoulder belt lies across the shoulder and chest (not your child’s neck).
