Just months after automakers were forced to recall millions of cars as a result of malfunctioning airbags manufactured by the Takata Corporation, the automakers Fiat, Honda and Toyota said they would recall approximately 2.1 million cars after reports of airbags inadvertently deploying.
While the reports are not nearly as dramatic as those associated with the Takata flaws (which involved airbags spraying shrapnel inside vehicles), an unnecessarily inflating airbag can pose a potentially lethal distraction to drivers and passengers. Our Minnesota product liability lawyers urge you to get your car checked out if it is a:
- 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty
- 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey
- 2003 Acura MDX
- 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe
- Dodge Viper
- Toyota Corolla
- Toyota Matrix
- Toyota Avalon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the deployment issues were related to a faulty electronic control unit. According to the NHTSA, there have been about 400 reports of airbags deploying in inappropriate circumstances.
We will continue to monitor developments with this recall.
