President Draws Attention to Dangerous Driving Habits

Our car accident lawyers serving Minneapolis and St. Paul want to draw attention to a Presidential Proclamation declaring December 2015 to be National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

Why would impaired driving concern our nation’s Commander In Chief?

Consider these statistics included in the December 1st Proclamation:

  • Each year, drunk drivers kill more than 10,000 Americans.
  • Roughly one-third of fatal accidents involve an inebriated driver.

Drugged and distracted driving were also called out by the President as increasingly dangerous public health and safety issues.” Every American can play a role in reducing the frequency of these incidents by speaking out and warning others,” reads the President’s statement. “It is also critical for drivers and passengers alike to wear seatbelts regardless of how far they are traveling.”

The naming of December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month coincides with statewide enforcement efforts to cut down on distracted driving. In Minnesota, local and statewide law enforcement agencies have already boosted the state’s safety ranking through the holiday season with hopes of preventing the annual uptick of holiday drunk-driving related deaths.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the percentage of traffic accident fatalities due to impaired driving between 2010 and 2014 have increased by:

  • 53.8 percent on Thanksgiving
  • 46.2 percent on Christmas Day, and
  • 12.5 percent on New Year’s Day
