General Motors Facing Controversy Over Ignition Malfunctions

General Motors has faced withering controversy for its handling of a recent recall of more than two million cars over ignition switch problems that have played a role in dozens of deaths. Since the recall, it has been discovered that GM engineers knew of the problem as early as 2004 and took measures to cover it up. GM CEO Mary Barra was called before Congress to address accusations that the company did not move quickly enough after it learned of the problems.

The conversation over corporate and regulatory failures is crucial, and a thorough investigation is needed to get to the bottom of the problems. GoldenbergLaw’s personal injury lawyers are very concerned with the health and safety of drivers in Minneapolis, throughout Minnesota and across the nation.

GM was forced to recall the vehicles after it was discovered that the ignition switch could move out of the on position and shut down the vehicle. The models recalled include:

  • 2005-2007 Chevy Cobalt
  • 2005-2007 Pontiac G5
  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2006-2007 Chevy HHR
  • 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2007 Saturn Sky

What to do if your car was part of the recall:

GM will replace the ignition switch at no charge through a local GM dealership. Dealerships were expected to begin receiving the parts needed to make the repairs on April 7. If you bought your vehicle new, you will receive a letter with the important details. If you bought your car used, you should contact the nearest Minnesota GM dealership.GM claims that the cars are safe to drive if the ignition key is alone when placed in the ignition (the added weight of a key ring can cause the switch to flip), but if you are uncomfortable with this you should ask the GM dealership about a loaner car.

You can find additional information about the recall at GM’s ignition switch recall site. GoldenbergLaw’s personal injury lawyers will continue to follow developments in the investigation.
