Helmet Laws for Motorcycles

Each state has its own set of laws governing motorcycle safety. The goal is always to reduce the potential for serious injury in case of a motorcycle accident. In Minnesota, every motorcyclist under the age of 18 – both drivers and passengers – must wear a helmet. Additionally, anyone driving a motorcycle with a learner’s permit must wear a helmet, regardless of age.

Minnesota law also dictates that motorcycle operators of all ages must wear eye protection. Helmets and eye protection devices should comply with the standards established by the Commissioner of Public Safety. (Source: AMA)

The only exceptions to these laws are:

  • Motorcyclists participating in an officially authorized parade; and
  • Motorcyclists riding within an enclosed cab.

Helmet and eye protection standards are always subject to change, so it’s best to check with the Public Safety Commissioner before heading out on the open road.
