RECALL: 6.5 Million Pounds of Beef Recalled for Salmonella Contamination
The USDA announced today that meat producer JBS Tolleson, Inc. is recalling 6.5 million pounds of beef due to a salmonella contamination. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), 57 cases of salmonella illnesses between August 5 and September 6 are linked to this outbreak.
Recalled Brands of Beef
The recalled beef was sold nationwide under brand names such as Walmart, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, and JBS Generic. The USDA inspection mark on the packaging notes “EST. 267” on the recalled products.
If you purchased beef under those brand names, it is advised to throw away or return it to the place of purchase. The USDA also recommends that ground beef be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid food poisoning.
Symptoms of Salmonella
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. While many people recover on their own, other individuals experience persistent diarrhea and need to be hospitalized.
