Fosamax Osteoporosis Medication

Fosamax was approved by the FDA in November, 1999. Fosamax is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Merck and is prescribed to prevent Osteoporosis and Paget's Disease. Fosamax, however, can have serious side effects including Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ), allergic reaction, chest pain, and heartburn.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Merck issued a warning on February 24, 2004 because of a connection found between Fosamax and other bisphosphonates and a disease called Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ). ONJ, also known as "Dead Jaw", occurs when bone tissue in the jaw fails to heal after minor surgeries, such as a tooth extraction. This failure to heal causes the bone in the jaw to be exposed, which can lead to infection, fracture, and need for long-term antibiotic use or surgery to remove the bone tissue that is dying. For patients using Fosomax and other bisphosphonates, prevention and early treatment are vital to preserving the jaw.
